Why I Created Jolie Lab — And Why Your Skin Deserves Better After Every Sweat Session
By Louisa Walsh — Skin Therapist & Founder of Jolie Lab
Let me be honest with you.
Hot yoga is hard. Cold plunging is hard. Nobody is floating blissfully through either of them. The heat hits you like a wall. The cold water takes your breath away — every single time. And I say this as someone who now does both regularly and genuinely loves them.
But let me start at the beginning.
I have been working with skin professionally for over a decade. In my clinic, I have seen every skin type, every concern, every reaction. I understand skin biology deeply — not just what it looks like on the surface, but what is happening beneath it at a cellular level.
About a year and a half ago, I discovered hot Pilates and hot yoga. Then I got ambitious by trying cold plunging. I needed to start something new, and challenge myself, leave my little comfortable routine. Hot yoga was so difficult — the mind has to be quieted. All the nonsense and negativity that I was telling myself about my capability to move in deep heat and challenging movements had to go quiet. It was an incredible experience, just being with myself, no noise. Then the cold plunge. My first plunge was in the cold winter sea on a beautiful calm day. I got into the water gradually with a friend — she was very used to it. I went in very slowly and the pain of the cold disappeared after a little while. My poor dogs started barking and were a bit worried; they stayed with me and we all went back happy and so proud of ourselves.
Let's talk about the skin for heat and cold activities.
Here is the thing nobody warns you about when you are a skin therapist who also happens to have sensitive, allergy-prone skin: intense heat and cold are extraordinary for your health — and they can absolutely wreck your skin if you do not protect it correctly. I know this from personal experience.
What Happens to Your Skin in the Heat
When you step into a hot yoga studio or an infrared sauna, your body temperature rises, your pores open wide, and you begin to sweat — genuinely and deeply. This is magnificent for your health. You are flushing toxins, stimulating circulation, reducing inflammation at a systemic level. The feeling afterward — once you have survived it — is unlike anything else.
But here is what is also happening: your skin barrier is under stress. The heat disrupts the delicate acid mantle that protects your skin. Sweat, if left sitting on the skin, becomes alkaline and irritating. For sensitive skin — and mine can react to almost anything — this is where the problems begin. Redness. Tightness. Breakouts in places you do not normally break out.
I experienced all of this myself. And I started paying very close attention to what my skin needed.
And Then There Was the Cold Water
The cold water does something to the nervous system that nothing else replicates. The clarity after a cold plunge — that calm, almost euphoric state — is real and scientifically documented. Endorphins rise. Cortisol drops. The mind goes very quiet.
For the skin, cold water constricts blood vessels, reduces inflammation, tightens pores and gives the complexion an immediate luminosity. Regular cold water exposure has been shown to improve skin elasticity and circulation over time.
But done without the right skincare support — cold water strips the skin's natural oils, disrupts hydration, and can trigger sensitivity and dryness, especially in the Irish climate where cold sea swimming is a year-round practice for many of us.
I needed something that worked as hard as I was working.
So I Created Jolie Lab
I used everything I know — over a decade of clinical skin therapy, years of formulating skincare, deep knowledge of medical-grade ingredients — to create something that did not exist anywhere on the market.
Skincare specifically formulated for active, heat-immersed and cold-immersed lives.
Not generic wellness products. Not pretty packaging with ordinary formulas. Clinically formulated, results-driven skincare bundles designed to protect and strengthen the skin barrier through every challenge — every sweat session, every sauna, every cold plunge, every sea swim, every hot yoga class.
Simple. Efficient. Genuinely effective.
For anyone who pushes their body — and wants their skin to keep up.
What Makes Jolie Lab Different
Every product in the Jolie Lab range was developed with one question in mind: what does skin actually need when it is regularly exposed to extreme temperatures?
The answer is barrier protection, cellular hydration, anti-inflammatory actives, and skin microbiome support — all in formulas that perform under pressure and are clean enough for sensitive, reactive skin.
Because if they work on my skin — which is sensitive, allergy-prone, and regularly subjected to the full contrast of sauna and cold water — they will work on yours.
This Is For You If…
You do hot yoga, hot Pilates or infrared sauna regularly
You cold plunge, wild swim or take cold showers
You work out intensely and your skin shows it
You have sensitive or reactive skin that struggles with temperature extremes
You want skincare that performs as hard as you do
You believe that beautiful skin is built — not bought
