Let me be honest with you.

Hot yoga is hard. Cold plunging is hard. Nobody is floating blissfully through either of them. The heat hits you like a wall. The cold water takes your breath away — every single time. And I say this as someone who now does both regularly and genuinely loves them.

But let me start at the beginning.

I have been working with skin professionally for over a decade. In my clinic, I have seen every skin type, every concern, every reaction. I understand skin biology deeply — not just what it looks like on the surface, but what is happening beneath it at a cellular level.

About a year and a half ago I started doing things to my own skin that I had never done before. I discovered hot Pilates and hot yoga. Then cold plunging. Then the full contrast — heat, sweat, cold water, repeat.

Here is the thing nobody warns you about when you are a skin therapist who also happens to have sensitive, allergy-prone skin: intense heat and cold are extraordinary for your health — and they can absolutely wreck your skin if you do not protect it correctly. I know this from personal experience.

What Happens to Your Skin in the Heat

When you step into a hot yoga studio or an infrared sauna, your body temperature rises, your pores open wide, and you begin to sweat — genuinely and deeply. This is magnificent for your health. You are flushing toxins, stimulating circulation, reducing inflammation at a systemic level. The feeling afterward — once you have survived it — is unlike anything else.

But here is what is also happening: your skin barrier is under stress. The heat disrupts the delicate acid mantle that protects your skin. Sweat, if left sitting on the skin, becomes alkaline and irritating. For sensitive skin — and mine can react to almost anything — this is where the problems begin. Redness. Tightness. Breakouts in places you do not normally break out.

I experienced all of this myself. And I started paying very close attention to what my skin needed.

And Then There Was the Cold Water

About a year and a half ago I started cold plunging. Not because it sounded appealing — it absolutely did not — but because I needed something to clear my mind. Something that would cut through the noise and bring me back to myself.

It worked. Immediately and completely.

The cold water does something to the nervous system that nothing else replicates. The clarity after a cold plunge — that calm, almost euphoric state — is real and scientifically documented. Endorphins rise. Cortisol drops. The mind goes very quiet.

For the skin, cold water constricts blood vessels, reduces inflammation, tightens pores and gives the complexion an immediate luminosity. Regular cold water exposure has been shown to improve skin elasticity and circulation over time.

But done without the right skincare support — cold water strips the skin’s natural oils, disrupts hydration, and can trigger sensitivity and dryness, especially in the Irish climate where cold sea swimming is a year-round practice for many of us.
