Understand Your Fitzpatrick Skin Type — And How to Keep Your Skin Healthy

Recently, while doing a skin analysis, one of my new clients made a surprising discovery about her own skin. She is a lovely Irish woman from West Cork who had always assumed — because of her heritage — that she was a Fitzpatrick Type 1. But after her analysis, she discovered she is actually a Type 3. It completely changed how she understood her skin's needs.
This happens more often than you'd think. And it matters enormously.
What Is the Fitzpatrick Scale?
Developed by Harvard dermatologist Dr Thomas Fitzpatrick in 1975, the Fitzpatrick Scale classifies skin into six types based on how it responds to UV exposure. It remains one of the most widely used tools in dermatology and aesthetic medicine today.
| Type | Skin Colour | Sun Response |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Very fair, often freckled | Always burns, never tans |
| 2 | Fair | Burns easily, tans minimally |
| 3 | Light brown | Burns moderately, tans gradually |
| 4 | Moderate brown | Burns minimally, tans well |
| 5 | Dark brown | Rarely burns, tans deeply |
| 6 | Very dark/black | Never burns, deeply pigmented |
Why Does Your Fitzpatrick Type Matter?
Knowing your skin type helps you make smarter choices about sun protection, treatments, and skincare. Here's what the research tells us:
- Types 1–2 are at highest risk of UV-induced damage, premature ageing, and skin cancer. Daily SPF 50 is non-negotiable, even in Ireland.
- Types 3–4 are prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — dark marks left after breakouts, irritation, or treatments. Brightening ingredients like Vitamin C, niacinamide, and azelaic acid are key. Our Pigment Perfecting Serum and Vitamin C Brightening Serum are formulated specifically for this.
- Types 5–6 have more natural UV protection but are highly susceptible to PIH and uneven skin tone. Harsh exfoliants and certain laser treatments can cause damage if not carefully chosen.
Skin Tendency vs. Skin Type
Your Fitzpatrick type tells you about your relationship with the sun — but your skin tendency tells you what your skin does day to day. The two are different, and both matter.
- Oily/acne-prone — excess sebum, enlarged pores, breakouts. Needs lightweight, non-comedogenic hydration and gentle exfoliation. Try our Niacinamide Gel Moisturiser.
- Dry/dehydrated — tight, flaky, dull. Needs barrier-supporting ingredients: ceramides, hyaluronic acid, squalane. Our Ceramide Barrier Night Cream is ideal.
- Sensitive/reactive — redness, stinging, intolerance to fragrance or actives. Needs fragrance-free, microbiome-friendly formulas. See our full sensitive skin range.
- Combination — oily in the T-zone, dry elsewhere. Needs zone-specific care.
How to Keep Your Skin Healthy — The Essentials
Whatever your type or tendency, these fundamentals apply:
- Cleanse gently — never strip the skin. A compromised barrier is the root of most skin problems. Our Radiant Glow Facial Wash is gentle enough for daily use on all skin types.
- Hydrate daily — even oily skin needs hydration. Dehydrated skin overproduces oil.
- SPF every day — UV damage is cumulative and the number one cause of premature ageing.
- Support your microbiome — the skin's bacterial ecosystem is central to barrier health. Our Microbiome Prebiotics Face Mist supports this daily.
- Less is more — a focused routine of 3–4 well-chosen products outperforms a 10-step routine of mismatched actives.
